The city of Saint-Pierre is particularly representative of Creole charm and cultural mixes of Reunion Island.
Go for a walk on the pier, between small fishing boats and raging waves of the Indian Ocean. Its large seafront recently converted (benches, playground, showers,...), creates an idyllic seaside lined with gardens, restaurants, snacks and bars where you can taste the specialties of the island. Its white sandy beach allows swimming in tranquility, protected by a coral reef. By continuing the waterfront, you will pass by a bridge by which the district of Terre-Sainte, that combines charm and authenticity, begins. A walk on the beach is very pleasant, to discover the typical houses and the lush vegetation.
Just behind the waterfront, you can find the busy city center of Saint-Pierre, where shops and small businesses will help to discover the local way of life. There is also a covered market, that means an essential tourist stop where you can discover local handicrafts. The structure dates back to 1863, and within the show of colors and scents are unique.
A walk in the hills above the city, promises a contemplation of Creole houses, that have retained their charm.
In the center, the town hall of Saint-Pierre, converted in a former coffee granary, reflects the colonial past and the influence of the East India Company.
At the end of the seafront, towards the “Ravine Blanche”, the Saturday-morning market takes place. Fruits and vegetables, grown on the island, spices, vanilla beans, fresh fruit juices, coconut sweets and “samoussas”...you will find plenty things to delight you in this huge market. The occasion also offers the possibility to buy a souvenir of your vacation. Near the market you can also enjoy the Hindu Temple, whose frescoes show a colorful testimony culture of the Tamil people.
Finally, at night, Saint-Pierre becomes the place for evening entertainment: restaurants, music bars, nightclubs and casinos succeed on the waterfront.
