The Piton de la Fournaise was built on southeast flank of the Piton des Neiges, 530,000 years ago.
Its actual cone, within a caldera was formed after the last large eruption 4,500 years ago.
The Piton de la Fournaise is the most visited tourist site of Reunion Island. Its solid covers about one third the size of the island rising to 2,632 meters. Its slopes are home to a large proportion of biodiversity of Reunion Island.
It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The red volcano regularly erupts but it is not dangerous. Fountains of lava turn into rivers of magma, that sometimes reach the sea in a plume of smoke.
The Fournaise is located in the “Parc National de la Réunion”, opened in 2007 and recorded on the World Heritage List by UNSECO in 2010.
Walks around the volcano are superb and safe because the trails are marked and well maintained. The ascent of the Piton de la Fournaise offers unique landscapes, which are renewed by the lava flows of the frequency eruptions. This events attracts many hikers. At less one eruptions occurs every year since 1998 (the longest eruption, which lasted 6 months). The most recent eruption was in January 2010. You can pass by the “Maison du Volcan” for having more information about the Piton de la Fournaise.
