Before 1692 Reunion Island was unoccupied. French since then, the Reunion Island is migrated by many people with different origins.
In the dates of slavery, thousands of men from Africa and Madagascar were brought to the island. After the abolition of slavery in 1848 there were migratory flows from India. Many Chinese arrived between 1880 and 1960 and after 1980 the Comorians. The arrivals of Metropolitan France increase constantly since 1960.
At Reunion Island “Cafres” (descendants of African slaves), Malbars, Tamils and Z´Arabes (from India), Gros Blancs (descendants of white settlers), Petits Blancs (or Yabs, descendants of poor white people), Zoreils (people from Metropolitan France), Chinese (merchants), Mauritians, Comorians and Malagasies live together in harmony.
This ethnocultural diversity of traditions is the main hallmark of the population of Reunion Island.
